[TRANS] 130305 The Bridges Magazine - Mar 2013 "Nichkhun, the first Thai idol"

Nichkhun Horvejkul or “Khun” is a world-famous K-pop idol who is adored all over Asia. He is a 2PM member, managed under South Korea’s JYP Entertainment.

The first steps into K-pop were not easy. Nichkhun, known in Korea as Nik-khun, became a JYP’s trainee after he was scouted in the US at the Korean Music Festival in LA. JYP housed many famous Korean artists such as Rain and Wonder Girls. With patience, Nichkhun overcame the difficulty of adapting to new environments. He stated from zero, without knowing how to sing, dance or speak Korean. And at the same time, he had to go through a tough training schedule. With support from his family in Thailand, Nichkhun put effort into practice and after 3 years he finally debut as a 2PM member along with 5 other friends. He danced and sang in front of the Korean fans and began to capture their hearts in a sort time. He followed that success by other entertainment appearances which allowed him to show his skills and their improvements, including emceeing, variety shows, modelling and product presenter. He received praises from his fan clubs who are scattered all over Asia and the world. Combined with the popularity of 2PM and K-pop, it is unavoidable that his every move is watched, much like having a stage light shining on him at all time.

The one thing that Nichkhun keeps close to his heart is the Thai origin. No matter where he is, Nichkhun will always showcase his pride for being Thai. Nichkhun’s success also brings pride to his fellow citizens.

Although the past year had been difficult for both Nichkhun and 2PM, the fans’ affection for Nichkhun remains strong and seems to grow warmer. The mounting obstacles were a test and, in turn, brought out the best of Khun’s qualities.

Returning to the limelight today along with 2PM members and being chosen to represent several brands still show that confidence in Nichkhun did not change. Especially the reaction from Hottests, the official 2PM fan club name, just seeing the members again brought tears to their eyes because they had missed seeing the members together. Nichkhun is back and he is ready to shine through past difficulties like a polished diamond, strong and valuable. If there is one thing to learn from Nichkhun in an age where patience is rare, it is his resilience, determination and inspiration. His insistence to act with principle no matter what situation he is facing is appropriate to his name ‘Nickhun’ meaning the person who has goodness as a virtue.

Nichkhun is a Thai person working in Korea, representing a connection for both counties. We bring you The Bridges Exclusive Interview.

Please say hello to readers of The Bridges

  • Annyeonghaseyo, I am Nichkhun. Nice to meet all of you.
When did you become an artist in Korea?
  • I became a trainee in Korea since 2006.
How did you become a JYP artist?
  • At that time I was in a high school in the US. I went with my friends to watch G.O.D perform. JYP scouts were had their eyes on me and I was casted. I have never though that I will become a singer or an entertainer. But after passing through the selection process, I consulted with my family. My grandmother is a fan of Rain (a JYP artist) so she recommended me to join and I came to Korea.
How hard do you feel was the training schedule?
  • Before I came to JYP, I did not know much about Korea. I had to go there alone and I could not communicate. At times I thought of giving up, but I also thought that I must try harder and do my best. If I train hard I will succeed. I worked hard practicing singing, dancing, language and body training. I became friends with Jun. K and Taecyeon and they helped me out a lot. I am very thankful for them.
Have you ever felt like giving up or felt sad?
  • At the start of my trainee days, I felt very exhausted. But I now have a very busy schedule and there are many people who love 2PM so I have to keep working harder. The fans are always following us and giving us support, and international fans started learning more about Thailand too. I am proud, and there are many fans in Thailand who love 2PM.
Like in the song “10 point out of 10”, rate yourself when you started off, and now.
  • I would give myself 1 or 2 points when I started. Now is probably around 5 points. There are many things for me to learn and I must keep working harder both the musical side as well as acting.
What is the difference between working in Thailand and Korea?
  • Language? Weather? I am just kidding. Since I can speak Thai, when 2PM comes over I would help them communicate. We go to Thailand often, for concerts and presenter work. I am happy that I can see Thai fans often.
Both your sisters are working in entertainment. What advice did you give to them?
  • My youngest sister is working in a musical, which is always her dream. I always support her and I told her that she had chosen this path by herself so she must be focused and determined. She must do her best for both herself and her fans.
What does it feel like to appear in a movie for the first time in ‘Seven Something’?
  • It was my first time acting which is very meaningful. I felt worried but the staff, director, Suquan and co-stars calmed e down and helped me through it. After it showed it gained interest in both Thailand and Korea. I am very pleased and if there is a chance I would like to try out in other roles. They do not have to be major roles, I just want to try out different things.
Between acting and singing, which one do you prefer?
  • I am interested in both so I cannot say which one is better. Everything I do, I want to do my best. If possible, in the future I would like to work with Hollywood. I will try my best in everything.
What is your daily routine like?
  • Every day is different. If the schedule is full I spend my time in the artist’s waiting room. If I am free then I will go exercise and rest with the members at home.
Do you have a lover?
  • Yes. My fans and family. Especially those who always love and support me without fail. I love you Hottest.
The kind of woman you like.
  • Cute, kind-hearted and is a good person.
And the kind of person you are?
  • I am quite open, sympathetic and silly. And you don’t have to worry about me, I am not someone who gives up easily. If I keep trying my hardest to the end, I believe the results will be in my favour.
What do you not like about yourself?
  • Just a little. I am a little too thin. I have to eat more and exercise more.
What is your favourite Korean food?
  • I like samgyupsal very much.
Have you ever cooked Thai food for other 2PM members?  Do they like Thai food?
  • I do not have time to cook but the members really like Thai food, especially Pad Thai and watermelon frappe.
When do you miss your family the most?
  • Probably during a family member’s birthday and their graduation days. When they started university I was with them, but I was not there to congratulate them at their congregations.
Can you recommend an interesting place for Thai fans to visit in Korea, and a place to visit in Thailand for Korean fans?
  • In Thailand, I would recommend Huahin. It is beautiful, tranquil and charming. When I am in Thailand I would visit there often. Phuket and Koh Samui are also very pretty. In Korea I recommend Busan which has a panorama seaview and delicious food. Seoul is also pretty, but Busan is charming in different ways.
Similarities between Korea and Thailand
  • Some of the food are similarly spicy and the culture of respecting the elderly and large family culture.
What is your plan to visit Thailand this year?
  • This April there is the Asia tour in Bangkok. It will be memorable so I would like lots of fans to come and support us.
Who are your favourite artists?
  • Justin Timberlake, Park Jin Young, Yiruma and Toh Saksit.
The most important things in life.
  • Family and fans are the most valuable things in my life.
What was your childhood dream?
  • When I was studying in the US I was a badminton player so I wanted to become one. I also liked cooking so I wanted to be a chef. I never thought of being a singer but fate brought me to where I am today. Since then, I learned and experienced plenty of new things.
How is it like living with 2PM members?
  • We are all busy so we do not have much time to spend together. We will stay at home and play games or cook together. But the dorm is quite quiet recently.
6 guys living together, there must be some funny stories to tell.
  • Everyone is extremely busy and we barely have enough time to sleep. When we have to wake up early there will be funny things. I do not sleep much and usually wake up early so I will wake other members up. It is a very difficult task, funny things have happened involving Jun. K and Taecyeon.
What is 2PM’s charm?
  • When we perform on stage. We look very smart, like real men.
10 years forward, what will happen to 2PM?
  • I think some members will still be in the industry. Some will compose or work behind the scene. I hope we will still go on stage together and continue meeting our fans.
Leave a message for Thai fans.
  • I am sorry that I cannot go back often. I miss you and thank you for everything. I hope all of you are healthy and well. In the year 2013, may only good things come to you and I wish you the best.
Lastly, say something to The Bridges readers.
  • Happy New Year. I hope you stay healthy and love The Brides a lot. Thank you very much.
